The Modern-Medieval Tarot is the creation of artists Shayn Amber Wetherell and Tim Wetherell. Shayn Amber is a digital artist and Tim is a sculptor. As a result, these images are an amalgam of both modern and traditional techniques. Our interest in Tarot comes primarily from an artistic perspective rather than a psychic or mystic one.
Tarot probably originated in fourteenth century Italy as a game with characters that resembled those of everyday medieval life. As such, it provides a fascinating insight into the medieval mind. In many ways, it's rather similar to chess with its bishops, kings and castles but much more complex in it's scope. Such games tell us a lot about how people viewed the world six hundred years ago. How they divided existence into its essential elements and who they saw the principle characters of their society as.
As visual artists primarily engaged in representing today's issues, this project provided an interesting challenge - contrasting the medieval view with that of the modern world. We haven't tried to re-create accurate historical images as might be found in a period movie, rather we've aimed for a surreal and dream-like amalgam of the old and new. The flavour of ages past with hints of the unexpectedly modern and bizare. The name Modern-Medieval is meant to suggest that the deck encompasses depictions of a range of eras modern through to medieval or simply "new medieval".
